Old sketch, new paint

This an older drawing that I'm currently redoing in photoshop.  My progress so far:

The creature is an original design.  He still has a ways to go, but it's a good start.

Study of deep-sea life + extra sketch

Studying deep-sea marine life. The top one is a catfish with an unusual fin, and the bottom is an an amphipod (looks similar to shrimp, but isn't)

These guys life in total darkness, and outstanding pressure.  That little shrimpy guy (who was actually pretty huge) glowed bright yellow around his "head" and "stomach."  Very fascinating.  Reference used.

And also, a quick figure sketch I did at home.

Sea Horse, part 1

A new creature concept I started working on last week.  My concept was "Sea Horse."  Basically, I wanted to make a hyrbid of a horse and some form of marine animal.

First, I started off with some  thumbnails.

With the help of some friends (thanks Kymm, Jay :3 ) I wittled it down to the top three, and then one.

I decided to go with a horse and shark hyrbid.  I like to choose specific breeds/species of animals when I use reference, so for this project, I choose the blue shark, and a purebreed Arabian horse.  I don't know all that much about horses, except for riding a few times as a kid.  But Arabians are so elegant, they're really just gorgeous.  And I chose a blue shark instead of a bigger species like a hammerhead or a great white, because...well, they're just sort of cute. You know...as far as sharks go.

See? He's happy to see you!

Here's the first round of sketches, getting a feel for the creature...

I've gotten some great instructions from my old teacher, Stephen Missal, and I'm going to be making some changes in the next round of sketches. Stay tuned!
